8 Tips for a Reduced-Emissions Road Trip

Nothing exemplifies an American summer quite like a road trip. What better way to spend long, sunny days than seeing the USA by automobile? Because the act of driving lies at the heart of a road trip, this type of journey isn’t always the best for air quality and the environment. However, there are ways to experience this classic type of adventure while reducing emissions and implementing sustainable practices.

  1. Map it out. Make sure you plan your route in advance to avoid wrong turns and extra mileage.

  2. Put it on cruise. Maintaining a consistent speed by using cruise control will give you better gas mileage.

  3. Pack lightly. The heavier your vehicle is, the worse your gas mileage will be.

  4. Nix the rooftop rack. If you can get all your luggage in your vehicle, be sure to remove the rooftop rack before setting off. Even an empty rack will decrease your gas mileage.

  5. Get tuned up. Ensure tires are properly inflated and go ahead and get your oil changed before embarking on your great adventure.

  6. Rent a hybrid. Consider renting an energy efficient car for your trip. Depending on the total miles of your trip, the money you save from refueling less frequently could make up for the cost of the rental car.

  7. Pack snacks and lunch supplies. Having snacks on hand will help reduce the amount of stops you need to make along the way.

  8. Reduce idling. When you do need to make a pit stop, remember to park the car and turn it off instead of idling in drive-throughs or while waiting for other members of your party to take care of business.

Now that you’re all ready for your eco-friendly road trip, tell us where the road will take you and how you’ll keep it green in the comments below. We wish you safe and happy travels this summer!
